Start of the Trojan War

This is where I am going to start up and finish the project...

GENERAL CONSIDERATIONS

Scale: 28 mm This means contrast and clarity matter more than perfect realism. To maximise the "look" I'll want strong mid-tones, sharp highlights, and slightly desaturated shadows to keep the figures "readable" at arm’s length.

Palette logic:
Each faction should have:

  • A core tunic / clothing color range

  • A leather / wood / metal tone

  • Accent color(s) to distinguish elite units  and/or shield motifs

  • A shared Mediterranean base (warm earths, sun-bleached fabrics, oxidized bronze)

TROJAN WAR SKIRMISHERS — COLOR GUIDE (28 mm)

 GENERAL NOTES

  • Lighting: Harsh Mediterranean sun — strong highlights, warm undertones, and dusty shading.

Optional Weathering

EffectMix Recommendation
Dust / Dirt        Light drybrush 70976 Buff or Reaper 9064 Aged Bone
Verdigris on Bronze        Glaze 70897 Bronze Green + 70909 Duck Egg Green (1 : 1)
Sun Fading        Add 70976 Buff or Ivory to top-surface highlights

Helmets

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/6/62/Eberzahnhelm_Heraklion.jpg/250px-Eberzahnhelm_Heraklion.jpg
  • Boar’s-Tusk Helmet: Leather or felt cap with strips of boar tusk stitched on.

  • Bronze Cap / Bronze-reinforced Helmet: Simple bronze or leather-metal mix, emerging late in the Bronze Age.

  • Dendra-style Bronze Plate Helmet: Heavy bronze plate helmet associated with the full panoply, used by elite warriors.

Painting/Colour Scheme Suggestions

  • Use a warm polished bronze tone for the helmets (e.g., base metallic bronze + brown wash).

  • For boar’s-tusk parts: an ivory or bone colour, slightly weathered (sepia wash).

  • Leather bases: dark brown with lighter brown highlights.

  • Crest or plume (for elite/higher status): red or white horsehair or dyed leather strips.

  • Add wear: scratches, darkened edges, maybe slight green patina for bronze.

Historical Overview

  • Greek / Mycenaean helmet production in the 14th-12th centuries BC was evolving: organic materials (leather, tusks) still common, full bronze forms emerging.

  • Boar’s-tusk helmets are iconic of Mycenaean elite and referenced in epic tradition.

  • Heavy bronze helmets (like those associated with Dendra) would be rarer, probably for chariot crews or nobles.

  • Achaeans – Late Bronze Age Greece

(a version of the playthrough of the Goodman Games' adventure)

Nine months ago on the island of Alviz when you joined a fanatical religious sect led by the charismatic Captain Bradford and his second-in-command, Parris. The two preached the teachings of Klazath, God of War, and convinced the congregation they needed to travel to the remote land of Lys to introduce the Lysian copper miners to life under the yoke of Klazath’s banner.
Three weeks into your month-long sea voyage, the congregation was waylaid when Captain Bradford was swept overboard during a sudden freak storm. Without the captain, the ship crashed onto a reef on a remote uncharted island, cutting the journey short.
As second-in-command, Parris was declared magistrate. Magistrate Parris convinced you and the other the colonists the shipwreck was divine providence, demonstrating Klazath’s will to settle “New Crimson” here on this remote island. Almost immediately, hardships began to befall the settlerment. Klazath is, after all, a god of conquest, and as the island was uninhabited, there was no conquest to be had. Not long thereafter, you found yourselves facing starvation when the crops began to rot in the fields, and infighting soon followed. Paranoia escalated when some of the other starving colonists began exhibiting erratic behavior. Magistrate Parris decreed that the colony’s enduring hardships were the result of some within their ranks becoming tainted by the foul Malotoch, the Carrion Crow Goddess of Death! Parris worked with New Crimson’s only cleric, Acolyte Harker, to organize a series of trials, and those accused of coming under Malotoch’s influence were condemned as “witches”. “Witch mania” swept through the fledgling colony, and many soon found themselves sentenced to a slow and grisly execution on Danver’s Green. You stand shackled together with several of your emaciated colleagues. A crowd of your friends, families, and neighbors have gathered on Danver’s Green. Their voices call out in unison as they point up to the platform where your starving and emaciated bodies have been detained: “Burn the witches!”
Magistrate Parris, champion of Klazath and newly appointed leader of your small community, looks out upon your jurors’ fury-filled faces. He is joined by Acolyte Harker, New Crimson’s only cleric. In his right hand, Harker holds a torn crimson banner emblazoned with a bloodied battleaxe—the war banner of Klazath, God of Conquest. And in his left hand, he brings to heel a leashed shug monkey, a vicious dog/monkey hybrid. Parris’ voice booms out, “Which of you faithful servants of Klazath will offer testimony as to the crimes and sinful associations of the accused?” You hear the thirst for vengeance in their cries as accusations quickly fly forth: “I witnessed him eating worms and cawing into the sky!” “She grows a beak at night!” “I saw him riding a broom at midnight!” “That one sprouted black feathers from her arms!” “I dreamt that one coupled with Malotoch Herself!” The fervent accusations agitate the shug monkeys who pull at their chains and snarl, baring their yellow teeth. Magistrate Parris looks towards your group gravely. “The evidence is overwhelming! Our colony is not yet free of Malotoch’s influence. The demon witch Abutit has infected these unworthy ones before her escape. Klazath demands these tainted ones be scourged with purifying flame, and have the sin crushed out of them with stout stones!” As you are led away to your execution, Parris nods towards hisassistant and adds, “Acolyte Harker is confident that once these tainted ones are put down, Klazath will grant him the strength to manifest Klazath’s divine rations and finally put our hunger to an end!” Harker, a vacant look on his face, nods numbly.

"The best-laid schemes o' mice an' men / Gang aft a-gley" by Robert Burns

Merlin in Cornwall...

Well...long silence. Then a long silence followed by an announcement and another silence.

Where to start...

When I was last posting, I lived in the USA, was a contract wildland fire fighter for the NPS and had a weekly newsletter published called This Week in Wargaming. I also painted miniatures for a very small client base and had four painters who painted stuff for me...yup crazy. I played at least 26 miniature games and 52 boardgames a year. Had a property that rented out to studios for catalogs, film and television commercials...

All of that is changed...somewhat. A lot. Actually.

My kids are launched and successful <brag>
I retired from wildland fires <stupid decision>
Tried to volunteer for the UK forest service <they didn't know what to think that>.
Married a wonderful Irish woman.
Moved my dogs and my boots and some of my stuff to the UK.
Stopped painting for others <the prices fell out of the bottom of that!>
Got hired by a company to handle security, logistics and operations for the BoD.
Got convinced to run games as Team Building for Companies.
Work for StartPlayingGames.com as a contract game master (the price on that has fallen too but I persevere...it's fun.). https://startplaying.games/gm/mark-reviews
Hike almost every day with my three dogs.
Travel a lot.

Two of some of my favorite trips over the recent period...Sorrento & Cervinia

Why am I telling you this? I received a number of emails from former fans asking for updates...so here you go...

An Update:

What did I do last month:
Drove almost 4000 miles around the USA visiting friends, clients and family.
Attended two conventions in the USA
Ran 30 sessions of Paid Games for SPG (should have been more than that but life intervened):

Some of my Games...please excuse the AI art...still looking for live artists...

Re-Started painting:

  •     Old Glory Trojan War Skimishers
  •     Assasins Creed
  •     Rerouni Kenshin & Test of Honour Samurai
  •     Ortega Clan from Malifaux
  •     D&D Monks & an adventurer (carrying way too much stuff)
  •     Cyberpunk Red Arasaka Starter Set
  •     Brigade Games WW2 Germans (my last contract)
My finished Ortegas

Contract Germans for Brigade...
a close up...
The goals is to post weekly...start adding photographs...and I may also add some writing that is loosely based on one or two of my regular games with friends...

Let me know what sound's good to you.
